Which is harder chess and checkers

It's your own thread. That's a bogus demand. Anyone with an introductory knowledge of both games can easily see why chess is more complex than checkers. Simply realizing that one game has multiple units of movement variance is enough to understand that is more complex than the other. Chess is much more difficult. In chess there are many pieces, in checkers there are only "pawns" and "pawn that can move backward".

By the way, does anybody know a good website where I can find information about checker strategy? I am interested in this game, but I am so weak :D. Checkers will improve your ability to calculate. Forced variations often happen in checker games which gives you the ability to work on your depth of calculating and board vision.

To be a good checkers player you must have a good calculating ability. I used to play a woman in a nursing home when I was a child many years ago and she could calculate many moves ahead and many times she's look up at me with a smile and say things like "looks like I win in 12 turns!

Watch what happens" and play out nine or so turns to show she'll have my king cornered and then tell me to try another move. I tried several times to get her to try chess but she'd have none of that. The great checkers player Marion Tinsley was said to be able to see moves ahead. One time he was observing the position from another game. Someone asked Tinsley what move he would recommend. Tinsley then took an inordinately long time studying the position.

Observers wondered what was taking Tinsley so long as the good moves for that position were relativley obvious. Tinsley finally said he was thinking about how that game ended up in such a messed up postition, and that he thought he'd figured it out. Tinsley then, without having seen the scoresheet, correctly replayed the game backwards all the way to the starting position.

I doubt any top chess players had any better aptitude for board games than Tinsley. Why then does checkers have an image problem? Maybe because the pieces are boring disks No dramatic revealed checks, no skewers, no pins, no drama.

Checkers - If you never move your back row. Seriously, I think the question is a little bit vague. By which is "harder", do you mean mean which one requires more exceptional talent for a human to reach top levels of play? First, let me state that both games have a rich history and anyone who undertakes the challenge of mastering games of logic such as checkers or chess has my respect.

Dale E. It is an upper bound because not all of the configurations are legally reachable according to the rules. Perhaps a more meaningful comparison is to consider the number of possible moves in an average game position a player can consider. In checkers there are 8 possible moves, not considering captures , in chess this number is between While both games can tax the human mind to its computational limits, analytically speaking there is little doubt as to which is more complicated.

Is there notation with checkers? Are exciting games from history analyzed? I'm sorry, but checkers just doesn't have the "it" factor. The pieces are all the same, move the same Forums Off Topic.

Feb 11, 1. The only ones who have mastered this game, reside there. Feb 11, 2. Feb 11, 3. Only with the original position. It needs some new few months to solve it.

Be careful to that. This is not to diminish the achievements of the Chinook team however, which are considerable. Moreover, when the game is eventually solved to the satisfaction of the players, it will not affect the game adversely at all. There are 2 main reasons for this: first, it will almost certainly show that all of the 3-move ballots are sound, and soundness is a condition for their inclusion anyway!

In other words, since every serious player and writer has considered the game to be a theoretical draw — the computer will actually provide an absolutely unshakeable foundation for the game. A forced win, on the other hand, would render the game dead and buried. For myself, I very much welcome the programs: a world class opponent whenever you want one; a world class analyst to verify play.

Like Liked by 1 person. Thank you for such a brilliant article. I have read articles of comparisons between chess and Go, chess vs Xiangqi vs Shogi etc and personally I find those arguments trivial and childish. Every game has its orientation and feel and complexity or not its worth exploring and enjoying.

I red somewhere that soviet chess grandmasters also used to include checkers in their training regiment. Playing checkers used to sharpen their tactical awareness because checkers is tactically rich.

The whole argument is as silly as comparing languages French vs English or sports Soccer vs Basketball. Really a nice article. But not only chess players. We have a lot of pedagogy for them. Yous article is doing that. I have no criticism to make of chess, but the amount of knowledge required in checkers to compete with geniuses such as Marion Tinsley, Asa long and Walter Hellman is immense. In addition to great crossboard ability of course.

In Checkers the aim of the game is to capture or block all enemy pieces.

In Chess, the goal is associated with only one piece — a King. Capturing rules are different in both games. In Draughts capturing is mandatory and this is crucial for the mechanics of the game you can force your opponent to make particular moves.

In Chess, there are 5 types of pieces. In Checkers there are only 2 kinds of pieces. Boards used in both games are essentially different if we consider fields that can be occupied by pieces. In Draughts you play only on the dark squares connected only diagonally with the exception of orthogonal draughts. In Chess, there are more fields connected diagonally, vertically and horizontally.

Chess and checkers are of different origins. Checkers come from Alquerque while chess is a descendant of Chaturanga. Mathematical proofs? Theoretical number of positions in practice A large number of possible moves does not always have importance in practice. The weaker someone plays chess the simpler Draughts becomes? The rooks are most likely activated after the opening.

The bishops are worth 3 points, but they can be extremely powerful in pairs. They move diagonally any number of squares. Bishops can move swiftly from one end of the board to the other when given an open-free diagonal.

Knights are very tricky pieces and should be respected by all players. They have the ability to jump over other pieces. It moves two squares in one direction, and then one more box at a right angle. The result is an L-shape. Like the Bishops, the knights are worth 3 points. Pawns are worth the least of all the pieces, but they are regarded as the soul of chess. There are 8 pawns in total and they all start on the second rank of the chess board.

They usually move one square forward, but can move two squares on their first move. Pawns can only capture pieces diagonally in front of them.
