Why do people like vera wang

I demand nothing less than great construction. My upper end and the work we do for the red carpet in Hollywood is supposed to inspire and be somewhat influential—certainly, I hope, in the American market.

Within that, we try to suggest a certain modernity in lifestyle wear. We try to bring that philosophy to the brand. You were known as a bridal designer for so long. How did the rest of the business evolve? I actually started my bridal line only two weeks earlier than my couture evening-wear line, if you can believe it.

When I opened my store, it was not even my bridal gowns. I purchased from everybody in the world—London, Paris. I was the editor, as I was at Vogue, and I brought in all different kinds of clothes and designers. But then I put in one dress of mine to see if it would sell. And then two. And then three. And then five. And eventually it became completely me. Two weeks later, we started to do these bespoke evening cocktail dresses.

By word of mouth, women would come in to have them made. We still do some one-of-a-kind, but then I also had to learn how to reproduce. Can you get a scale on the garment? I also look for an affinity and understanding of what I do, my brand, my sense of style. How do you balance your time between the two? I prioritize like mad. We strive for accuracy and fairness. It's quite logical, actually, because if someone screaming really loudly, something's wrong or something needs to be fixed.

That's sort of how I operate. Prioritizing is not always possible because, very often, there are 10 things that are equally important.

It's just, how do you manage to address as much as you can in a positive way. But if you really love something, whatever it is, that is a big start. If you don't love it, you will not make it through.

For me, fashion became the next passion [after skating]. As I said to my father, I need a reason to get up in the morning. I need a reason to feel compelled or excited or hopeful or even frightened. So I went to Vogue. But in my own mind, I had not obtained what I hoped I would. I felt that, again, I've fallen short. I didn't make the Olympic team. I didn't become editor-in-chief at Vogue. I always sort of dreamed of being a fashion designer, and I thought, well, if I don't try it now, I'm never going to be able to do it.

So I went to Ralph Lauren through my connections to Vogue and became a design director for all of women's [clothing] there. When I saw what it takes to build that kind of empire, if I had been sane, I probably would have stopped there.
